Microdermabrasion Q&A

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that uses tiny crystals to remove the superficial layer of skin, reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and other damage while helping skin look and feel smoother and softer. Some studies indicate microdermabrasion also may help promote the development of collagen, one of the building blocks of skin that helps skin stay resilient and firm.

What conditions can be helped by microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lines, scars, and other imperfections in skin, including rough or abnormal skin texture and uneven skin tone. Plus, it stimulates circulation and helps rejuvenate skin, removing dull skin while revealing fresher skin underneath.

What happens during microdermabrasion treatment?

Before treatment begins, the skin is carefully and gently cleansed to remove dirt and impurities. Then the crystals are delivered to the skin’s surface using a special handheld device moved over the skin surface. As the crystals slough away the upper layer of damaged skin, a vacuum tip removes debris from the skin surface, so the healthy deeper layer of skin is revealed. The length of treatment depends on the size of the area being treated. Once treatment is complete, the skin will probably appear pink, similar to the aftereffects of a mild sunburn. Moisturizers can be applied to protect skin and keep it smooth and supple, and additional care instructions will be supplied at the appointment.

Can microdermabrasion be used on anyone?

Microdermabrasion is a relatively mild treatment option that can be an ideal choice for most patients. However, it may not be an ideal solution for everyone. People with certain chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis may not be good candidates, especially during flare-ups. During the consultation appointment, a complete array of treatment options can be evaluated to determine which one offers the best option based on the patient’s skin type, existing conditions and treatment objectives.
